INNODIA PUBLICATION POLICY
DEFINITIONS
INNODIA iVZW – the international non-for-profit organization with registered office in Herestraat 49, Onderwijs en Navorsing 1bis, box 902, 3000 Leuven (Belgium), registered under number 0792.991.133 (RLE Leuven), hereafter “INNODIA"
INNODIA.Projects – projects funded by the European Commission, The Hemsley Charitable Trust, JDRF (now Breakthough T1D), and EFPIA partners as a global partnership between academic institutes, industry, and patients, gathering their knowledge and experience, with one common goal to eradicate type 1 diabetes. These projects officially ended on April 30th, 2024, hereafter “INNODIA.Projects”
INNODIA.Projects Partners – all academic or industrial partners participating into the INNODIA.Projects
INNODIA.Projects Participants – individuals who shared their data, gave samples, and signed an informed consent under the INNODIA.Projects
INNODIA data – all data managed by INNODIA and offered to 3rd paties (e.g.; INNODIA Members, Clients). Namely: data collected directly by INNODIA, data shared by INNODIA Members, and data generated or contributed by the INNODIA.Projects Participants and Partners thanks to a license agreement signed between INNODIA and all INNODIA.Projects Partners on XXX.
PREMISE
Given the activities implemented by INNODIA to accelerate medicine development in the field of T1D, INNODIA offers access to its Members and Clients to the INNODIA data managed by INNODIA. There needs to be a clear set of policies on how those who generated the data will be recognized for the work and effort implemented to generate the data that are shared with 3rd parties to ensure that:
- fair credit is given to those who have contributed to the generation of the data;
- relevant and important scientific findings with an impact are made available to the scientific community.
This document sets out the policies for all parties wishing to publish their results that include INNODIA data. It covers:

1. Purpose of the policy
The publication policy of INNODIA is designed to establish guidelines for the dissemination of research findings originating from INNODIA data, to foster collaboration, and to uphold ethical standards in authorship and intellectual property assignments.
2. Principles
- Transparency: All research findings should be reported accurately and transparently to ensure the integrity of scientific knowledge.
- Collaboration: INNODIA encourages collaboration among researchers, both within the INNODIA Network and with external partners, to maximize the impact of research outcomes.
- Ethical Conduct: All publications must adhere to the highest ethical standards, including but not limited to integrity in authorship, data handling, and conflicts of interest disclosure.
- Open Access: INNODIA encourages open access publication whenever feasible to maximize the accessibility and impact of research findings.
Should the INNODIA.Projects Partners be acknowledged, the H2020 Annotated Model Grant Agreement from the European Commission – specifically the article 29.2 on “Open Access to scientific publications” – must be followed (full document attached as Attachment 1) - Intellectual Property: INNODIA recognizes the importance of intellectual property (IP) rights and encourages researchers to protect their findings through patents, copyrights, or other means where appropriate.
- Confidentiality: Researchers must respect the confidentiality of unpublished data and materials shared within the consortium.
3. Authorship and Acknowledgments
- Authorship Criteria: If the INNODIA data used for the publication comes from a specific data set (described in Attachment 2), one scientist from the institute that generated the given data set must be included as an author.
If the INNODIA data used for the publication comes from multiple INNODIA.Projects Partners, the author list should include “On behalf of INNODIA consortium” and the list of the Investigators contributing to the specific data set needs to be included. - Acknowledgments: If the INNODIA data used for the publication comes from a data set not described in Attachment 2, it should be appropriately acknowledged (see Attachment 3 for specific acknowledgments).
4. Approval of all communication
All communications that include INNODIA data must be approved by the INNODIA Data Manager before dissemination or publication. The INNODIA Data Manager will ensure (through the INNODIA T1D Data &Sample Experts committee) that the data are presented in a scientifically sound and solid manner, that authorship rules have been followed, and that there are no intellectual property protection planned (if so, please refer to point 5 of this policy).
Approval for submission will be provided by the INNODIA Data Manager within 5 working days upon reception of all the necessary information needed to make a final decision (to be sent to data@innodia.org).
5. Approval of IP coverage using INNODIA data
All intellectual property (IP) protection efforts generated using INNODIA data must be submitted to the INNODIA Data Manager before IP protection is sought. The INNODIA Data Manager will verify whether any entity that generated the related data needs to be included in the IP protection process. Requests should be sent to the INNODIA Data Manager at data@innodia.org
6. Compliance and Enforcement
- Compliance: All researchers publishing results originated from INNODIA data are expected to adhere to this publication policy.
- Enforcement: Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action, including but not limited to loss of funding or termination of collaboration.
7. Policy Review and Approval
- Periodic Review: This publication policy will be reviewed periodically (every 2 years) to ensure its effectiveness and relevance in achieving the goals of the INNODIA project.
- Feedback: Feedback from INNODIA Data users will be solicited to inform future revisions of the publication policy.
